In this TED Talk, Clint Smith covers a controversial topic; the way black people are treated in America.
He starts off by telling the audience about some of his childhood experiences as a black child. Smith tells the memory of one might with his friends. Sometimes, he wouldn't want to do what his parents said, but later in life he understood why his parents took the precautions they did. As he grew up he came to see that often black men and women did not get the privileges in America everyone else did. After seeing these events occur, he thought about his parents and why they raised him a certain way, and how difficult it must have been to raise a black child. His parents had to protect him in many different ways and sometimes they would have to stop him from being a child, only to keep him safe. As a black child in America, he had to deal with many different things that no child should have to deal with. It's upsetting to think that children need to worry about what they do at such a young age. Parents shouldn't have to raise a child a certain way because of the color of their skin, and black people should get as many privileges as everyone else. It's clear that equal rights for everyone in America hasn't been accomplished yet, and that's a huge problem. Everyday on the news you see black men getting shot and killed by white men, with no charges pressed against the shooter. It's crazy to think that some people believe America has equal rights, especially black people. Clint Smith did an amazing job executing his opinion using his experiences being a black child in America. Equal rights for everyone has been a big issue for many years, and he did a good job stating that, giving many reasons why. Raising a black son in America shouldn't have to be any different from raising a son of any different race, and as a whole, we should keep fighting until that's the way it is. |
